NRI · Overseas elector workflow

Living abroad? Use the overseas-elector path.

“NRI voter” is the common description; ECI uses Overseas Elector. Form 6A—not Form 6—is the registration form for an eligible Indian citizen living abroad who has not acquired another country's citizenship.

Use the official overseas deletion path only when there is a proper basis. It is not a correction or registration form.

  1. Check eligibility

    You must remain an Indian citizen, be abroad for employment, education or another reason, have no foreign citizenship, and otherwise be eligible for registration.

  2. Confirm the Indian constituency

    ECI uses the place of residence in India shown in the passport to determine the constituency. Search the current roll first so you do not create a duplicate application. If converting from a general elector to an overseas elector, follow ECI's Form 6A declaration and EPIC-surrender instructions.

  3. Prepare the official evidence

    ECI lists a recent passport photograph, self-attested relevant passport pages showing the photograph, Indian address and other particulars, plus the page containing the valid visa endorsement.

  4. Submit Form 6A only on ECI

    File online through the ECI portal or use the official in-person or postal route. Save the acknowledgement or reference number.

  5. Complete passport-address verification

    A BLO may verify the Indian passport address. When the normal home-address verification cannot be completed, ECI may use the concerned Indian Mission for document verification.

  6. Track and verify the roll

    Track the application, then confirm that the name appears in the overseas-elector section of the relevant published electoral roll.

  7. Know how voting works

    Current ECI guidance says an overseas elector is not issued an EPIC and votes in person at the assigned polling station by producing the original Indian passport.

How to use SIR Assist

Install the browser companion once — about a minute — then each case is six steps, for each person you are authorized to search for: yourself, or someone who has asked for your help.

  1. Install the companion once: download the ZIP, unzip it, load the folder via chrome://extensions → Developer mode → Load unpacked, then reload this page until it says “Browser companion connected”.

  2. Enter the state, voter name, relative’s name, gender, and the most precise birth detail you know. Add a district only when useful.

  3. Find spelling variants or choose offline transliteration. Review every suggestion and keep only spellings that could genuinely refer to the same person.

  4. Review the planned queue, which is capped at eighteen exact searches, then start the first approved search.

  5. Read and type the official CAPTCHA yourself. One CAPTCHA submits one exact search; each later attempt needs a fresh CAPTCHA.

  6. Review the minimized possible matches. Verify any likely record on the official ECI service, or continue with the next approved spelling.

Who does what and safety limits

SIR Assist server

Hosts this page and the extension download, and generates bounded AI spelling suggestions from only the selected state and entered names. It never receives DOB, age, gender, district, CAPTCHA data or ECI results, and it never searches ECI itself.

Browser companion (extension)

Opens the official ECI page in your browser, fills one approved combination, relays the untouched CAPTCHA image, submits exactly once, and returns a minimized possible-match summary. Search details travel locally from this page to the ECI tab—never through SIR Assist servers.

You (human)

Read and type every CAPTCHA, approve every combination before it runs, and verify any possible match on the official ECI service.

What cannot be bypassed

  • Every submitted combination requires a fresh human-entered CAPTCHA. AI cannot solve, reuse or remove it.
  • ECI rate limits, outages, and inaccurate or missing electoral data remain outside SIR Assist's control.
  • A possible match is not identity confirmation—verify it on the official service.
  • A zero result only covers the exact combinations tried; it does not prove the person is absent from the roll.

Either way, you leave with an official next step — verify, correct, register, track, or the published roll itself.
